September is National Preparedness Month, and this year’s theme is “Preparedness Starts at Home.” For our Terrebonne Parish community, hurricanes are one of the most serious threats we face. Hurricane season runs June 1 through November 30, with peak activity in September — making now the perfect time to prepare.
Why Seniors Are at Higher Risk
Older adults may face unique challenges during disasters, including medical needs, limited mobility, or living alone. That’s why neighbors, caregivers, and family play an important role in making sure seniors are safe before, during, and after a storm.
Steps You Can Take
-
Have a Plan: Include medical needs, transportation, and pets. Seniors may need help arranging evacuation.
-
Prepare a Supply Kit: Pack extra medication, hearing aid batteries, oxygen, important documents, water, and nonperishable food.
-
Plan for Pets: Pets are family, too. Prepare food, water, leashes, carriers, and medical records. Identify pet-friendly shelters or accommodations in advance.
-
Stay Informed: Sign up for local emergency alerts, listen to evacuation orders, and know your nearest shelter.
-
Check on Neighbors: A quick visit or call can make a big difference for seniors who may need extra help.
